Thailand/Myanmar shaken by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake

Yesterday I was informed that a strong earthquake struck Myanmar near its border with Thailand. Tremors were felt as far away as Bangkok, almost 800 kilometres (500 miles) from the epicentre, Hanoi and parts of China during the earthquake on Thursday, which the US Geological Survey (USGS) measured at magnitude 6.8.

"The death toll of the quake has increased to more than 50 in Tarlay and Mine Lin townships," said a Myanmar official, who declined to be named.

"Roads are also closed. According to the information that we have, more than 130 buildings collapsed because of the quake. There might be more casualties and damage."

As we pray for Japan, do include Myanmar  and us here in Thailand as well.

Thank you.

Her and History on Smoking and Hubby

In my previous post HERE, I talked about my hubby's short-lived stint with smoking and what made him stop. His main concern is his breath. He doesn't want the antisocial breath the cigarettes caused. His next reason why he didn't let himself be hooked with cigarettes: to avoid male enhancement needs. This is because smoking can be very harmful to the body and can even cause a person's sexual experiences to be harmful. He read from Health and Home that smoking is one of the activities that has often been linked to impotence. This is due to how a person who smokes will be more likely to end up being harmed with regards to the blood. A person who is smoking will end up causing blood to become weak and to have a higher blood pressure level.

The reason why this is so harmful is that a high level of blood pressure can involve a man being unable to get blood to move into the penile area as well as it should be. This can be due to how the man will end up feeling weak in the penile area and may not have an easy time with getting it to be fully functional. This means that the penis can end up feeling weak and unable to handle sex.

He's glad that he stopped earlier and avoided working on male enhancement and dealing with extenze side effects.Hope that he knows that his decision made a great difference in our relationship...in our marriage. We're blessed with a son and he got a happy wifey.

Her and History on Smoking

I grew up in a non-smoking family. I didn't see my father smoke even before he's working as a manager in a palm industry in Agusan del Sur but I do remember that he received lots of cigars ( maybe some of them are discount swisher sweets cigars) as gifts from foreign contractors. Maybe my uncles do smoke but they respected my family so I didn't see any of them smoking. Because of this, you could understand my prayer to God that I wanted a husband who won't smoke. Yes, I'm that specific to God when I ask for a partner in life. He did answer that prayer. My hubby doesn't smoke but he did had a short-lived stint on smoking. Maybe all guys passed through that stage. I asked him during that short-lived stint, what did he feel after smoking. He responded that the physical act of exhaling can relieve him especially if it's a tense-filled moments. What made him stop? His main concern is his breath. He doesn't want the antisocial breath the cigarettes caused. So glad he made the right choice. Kissing him for the first time wasn't a problem after all...LOL!

As much as possible I stay away from smokers. It's not that I don't like smokers. It's the smokes I'm concerned of. Doctors say that secondhand smoke can even do more harm.

I once had a female classmate in high school who smokes. I asked her why she started smoking. Her answer: It looks smart to have a cigarette in between her fingers and it looks sophisticated. I'm not convinced! Are you?

The fear of the Lord adds length to life

Last night we read this passage in Proverbs 10:27 that states "The fear of the Lord adds length to life". Our youth-orientated culture often gives old age a bad image, but clearly God doesn't agree. To Him, old age is the reward for a life well-lived, a privilege earned, an accomplishment worth celebrating, and wisdom shared to benefit succeeding generations. He views long life as evidence of His favor. Longevity, with all its aches and pains, is a blessing. Few years ago, I met someone who doesn't want to reach 70 years old. She wanted to die gracefully at age 50 or 60. I asked her why? It's because she's worried that no one will take care of her when she gets old. She doesn't have a family. I let her read God's promises to His children found in the book of Isaiah "I have cared for you since you were born... I will be your God throughout your lifetime - until your hair is white with age... I will care for you...' What an insurance policy completed with social security disability insurance ! Is there proof that He does? Yes, ask David the Psalmist. 'Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread' (Psalm 37:25 NLT). You know what, that woman is now married with a son and she's not afraid anymore of getting old.

Me? I wanted to reach 100 years old!

He's a Filipino!

One of the janitors in school asked me if my hubby's a Thai or a farang (white man). In crooked Thai, I explained to her that my hubby is a Filipino. Afterwards, he saw my hubby fetched me in school. She complimented that he's handsome and looks like Thai. I told her that if she'll go to Philippines, they'll be mistaken in identifying her as a Filipino because her morena-look is really a Filipino.

Other mom bloggers whom I met in blogosphere who kinda knew that I'm living and working here in Thailand assumed that my hubby is a Thai. They probably thought that we met at work or in one of the free online dating sites. To make the issue clear, I wrote in my WBFC entry that my husband is a proud Filipino. Though we look the same with Thai, Filipino has his own unique ability and beauty that I wouldn't trade for other race. You see, I love our "own"...he..he...

10 Things to do before we'll leave for vacation

Yahooo!!!! One more week to go and we're off for vacation to our beloved Motherland, Philippines. We completed our travel trifecta – the airline tickets are booked, bags are packed and a taxi is already arranged to pick us up and send us to airport -now it's time to get organized. The trip planning process doesn't only ends on buying our plane tickets to packing to reaching our destination. It includes taking care of everything on our trip planning list before heading to the airport to catch our flight. So here are some things to be sure to check off on our list before we'll leave on vacation:

1. Make sure to empty the laundry bag , wash all our clothes and put them away in order.

2. Make sure the house is clean and sparkling, so when we'll be back (after a month) we'll not be blown away by a messy house!

3. Notify our landlady that we'll be out of town and asked her (we trust her) to pick up our mail .

4. Prepare a "Mother bag" to take care of odds and ends stuff. Those personalized tote bags I saw over at Posy Lane are the best for this occasion.

5. Of course, lock all doors and windows throughout the house. Unplug all electronic items. Make sure nothing is left in our refrigerator.

6. Put Mr. Clean in each of our toilets and pour a little in our drains. I'll use something I like to smell. This will keep our house from smelling bad from stagnant water.

7. Double check before leaving the house that we have all necessary essentials to travel with. I made a list which I can refer to so that I won't forget anything important.

8. Pay all the bills- babysitter's salary, house rental fee, electric bill, water bill, and telephone bill.

9. Because we don't have credit cards, I need to contact our debit card company before traveling to ensure the card will work in another country. We'll also changed some of our Thai baht to dollars.

10. Make a note of the things to do when we get home and leave it on the kitchen counter.

There are other reminders that would be good to have on our away list too (your suggestion will be highly appreciated), but these should be a good start to help keep me focused on necessary items to take care of before leaving on our fun family vacations.

Can't wait to reached Surigao del Norte! They said much have improved including the city's park. I've seen photos from my friends who are in Facebook that it's landscaping has improved- equally beautiful as of that Dallas landscaping.

Complicated Friendship

Yesterday I shared this post to my Facebook account:

According to an article in an English magazine, "A true friend is one who has the courage to disagree with us when we are in the wrong, and advise us for our own good, rather than let his sympathy or sentimentality cause him to agree."

I never thought that 19 friends gonna like it and even left some comments:

  • Amen...nice words for true friday morning te! Yes, it's truly nice words but could we really appreciate a friend who disagree with us when deep inside us we knew that we're wrong but still we're persistent to do such "wrong deeds" because we can't just let it go...because we could justify that "it's alright" at that moment?
  • been there, dear...the result we're not friend anymore. it happened to me many times.."LOOY KO?" silay louy...(Pity me not. Pity them.) I've been in the same situation too. Because we're both Christians, I'm confident that she'll understand what I'm doing, that she'll remember that what I'm doing is in line with  Proverbs 27:5 "Open rebuke is better that secret love" . Because I truly love her as a friend I confronted her in love, so that she'll not continue what she's doing. Rebuking her is because I love her and I only want what is good for her. Unfortunately, this doesn't work well for us. She said that if I truly love her I could tolerate what she does. I just can't do it. Confronting in love can be the most loving thing that I do for someone. It means if I care about someone, then I will care enough to stop her from driving off the road into sin to the destruction of her own soul. For me, if you stand by with your heart full of love and do nothing, it is not really love.
  • I agree with the article but i doesn't apply to all kind of people. By the way it only talks about a true friend. Yes, this truth is applicable for true friends only and this is the priceless value of having at least one such deep abiding friendship.
  • hahaha AGREE!!! pero ang problema... culturally speaking this is a big no no to most pinoys... kay mangluod or masuko ra bya dayun! hehehe...(but the problem is...culturally speaking, this is a big NO for most Filipinos because they feel bad or get angry when you do that) . I couldn't agree more. That's why after confronting a friend and she got angry with what I did,  I tried to save our friendship by stepping back. This stops me from saying or doing something irretrievable. Giving myself a chance to chill out can put things in perspective. It's my prayer that I could still be a loving friend to her and saying "I told you so..." wouldn't have a chance to be blurted out from my mouth when we meet again.
I never thought I could make a post out from that simple act (posting words of wisdom on my FB wall). Out from my own experience , here's what you can do after the drama of confrontation and ends up being dumped as a friend:

1. Stay nice. It's tempting to unload the burden to other friends but it's better to be avoided. There are two sides to every story. She may be right in her own way and I may be right in my own perspective. It do me no credit to dis an ex-pal.
2. Understand her feelings. Don't respond to insults or gossips about the end of friendship. It will only make the matter worse than ever.
3. Lose the guilt. Focus on why you want to end the relationship. It is not that person you are rejecting but the way the two of you interact.

I thank God for the gift of friendship. I thank God for my friends. It's my prayer that He will help me to be a loving friend as He is a loving friend to me.

Your $1 could send FE to Leadership Development Institute (LDI)

What you give becomes an investment that will return to you multiplied at some point in the future.--Jim Rohn (Jim Rohn's Weekly E-zine - June 24, 2003)

        Dear readers and fellow bloggers,

I'm writing to you in behalf of a friend and a sister in Christ, Fe Boligol,  whom I knew since she was in kindergarten and she's one of my Sunday School students. As one of the cell leaders, she was endorsed to attend the Leadership Development Institute (LDI). LDI is a short-term training core of the Lakas-Angkan Ministries, Inc.,which provides and equips its members the basic ministry and leadership skills. This leadership training will be held on April 24-May 25, 2011. Inasmuch as she wanted to join , she's constrained financially. The registration fee of Php 9,500 is undeniably fairly high for a nursing student like her who also has other needs as she'll graduate from her course this coming April.

This is her personal letter for us:

        Photobucket
Being a college student, it’s been a roller coaster ride in the financial aspect of this training. We were given almost a year to prepare, but we just couldn’t reach the ideal amount of money to raise. We’ve tried fund-raisers—raffle draws, catering services, piggy banks, and I’ve even tried selling second-hand books—but I guess one thing to learn in this challenge is to acknowledge that we cannot do it alone. That God will eventually be using people to aid us financially. That we will need to humble ourselves in order to reach what we fervently desire.

And so here I am, requesting your monetary assistance. And more importantly, soliciting your prayers. Though I cannot pay you back with anything but prayers and declarations of blessings, I know my God will never let any good action pass His vision. He is a God who rewards. Thank you in advance. God bless!

        Sincerely yours,

        Fe Boligol

Here's here Statement of Purpose to answer some of our questions on "Why she need to attend this training?"

The Lord Almighty will send me by all means to the Leadership Development Institute because:

        · He wants to display His power and grace through my life. He wants me to really get trained there despite the difficulties that the future poses (finances, time, etc.)

        · I am willing to be trained. I want to explore further on God’s great purpose for my existence, knowing that He will never send a thirsty soul to a dry well. I want to be a living testimony of His greatness, inspiring people and being an agent of positive change. I also want to be equipped to lead Christian leaders, not just followers.

        · This training is one-of-a-kind… and sadly, the last of its kind. I saw the transformation in its previous participants. So it’s kind of a last-trip bus one shouldn’t miss.

Can we be the people she mentioned that God will use to help/aid her financially? If you are interested in helping her, please send your donation and love gifts in any amount to my paypal address: genebeisajolan@yahoo.com. Just mention in a message "FOR FE". Whatever you give will be appreciated and I sincerely thank you for giving your precious time in going through this write up.

If you have any more questions regarding this training or you wish to seek any query, please feel free to contact FE BOLIGOL on days_of_discovery@yahoo.com or send her a message on her Facebook account at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000347343741 .

Just Beautiful: photo shootout with Janet Luison

Last Sunday, we had a photo shoot with a good friend of ours from Malaysia, Janet Luison. My girl friends and I had a first-hand experience on how it feels to work in front of a camera. The challenging part of the photo shoot process is trying to stay relaxed and comfortable. You see we're all amateur models and we run out of "posing styles" LOL! We're all concerned on how we "appear" on photos rather than minding the crowd of folks that look on...he..he...

After the photo shoot, we're all very excited to see them. Burnt out? I think none of us felt that but only excitement that reached the higher level that it's hard to regain the normalcy quickly...LOL!

We all just hope that we make life easy for the photographer and hope that she'll book us again for another photo shoot this year or next year.

        My family
        My solo

        Mother and son

My son works so naturally in front of the camera

        My Hyzyd is so sweet...

We all believe that the photographer takes great photos, not the camera. Thank you so much Ate Janet!

Weekend Blog Follower Caravan- Welcome to Her and History

Welcome to Her and History- a blog that relates how a working mom finds time to be a mommy and a wife, yet staying true to her passions. Along the way,the author will talk a lot about things her and her family are doing together and ways she's finding to stay connected to her son, despite being gone over 40 hours a week. From time to time, she will discuss topics related to EDUCATION, ENTERTAINMENT, HEALTH, GADGETS, MONEY, MUSIC, WOMEN, RELIGION and SCIENCE.

with my Anuban 1 (K-1) learners

I came here in Thailand on March 2006. Before that I used to be a college instructor in the Philippines for almost three years. Teaching is my passion and it runs in our blood-my mom is a teacher, my dad is training teachers and both of my brothers who's next to me are also teachers. Do I need to mention that my hubby, sis-in-law, aunties and uncles are all teachers too? Maybe we all like the idea that teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professionsfikir.

I love reading thriller novels of Sydney Sheldon and Agatha Christie. I'm quite introverted. I value my time alone. I really love PINK. Pink lovers are lovers of beauty. I'm friendly, charming, and warm. I get along with almost everyone.

My son , Hyzvhann Hyzydyll "Hyzyd" is the main reason why I started blogging. I wanted to chronicle his life's journey online so that his grandparents will be able to "see" him grow even we're miles away. I wanna express my gratitude for my friends Ate Litlit, Ate Love and Ate Janet for the motivation and inspiration to start a blog on my own. They're also my channel of information that I could earn while blogging. Since then I'm unstoppable...LOL! To date, I have 7 blogs with their own domains- Adventures with Hyzyd and Beyond, Tasty Exploration, Away from Home, Fashion Explorer, Genefaith's Home, Teaching Moments plus this main blog.

How do I juggle blogging with my hectic schedule? Since last year, I wake up as early as 3:00 am to start blogging and stop at 5:00 am to prepare breakfast for the family, send my 2-year old to his babysitter and be at school before 8:00 am. When I have lots of online tasks, I squeeze them into my lunch break from 11:30 am-1:00 pm. I don't blog in the evening because I train my son to be on bed before 9:00 pm. That means I'll be snoring my night away starting that time. I started to appreciate what my mom used to say "Early to bed and early to rise makes "my lil Gen-gen" healthy, wealthy and wise".

I'm Genebei Faith. I am a Filipino ESL Teacher here in Thailand . I'm Gene to my family but Teacher Jenny here in the "Land of Smiles". I'm married for 3 years already to my only boyfriend sengihnampakgigi and we got a 2-year old bubbly son. We started a family in this promising foreign land in year 2007 and Thailand became our second home since then. By the way, many asked me if my hubby's a Thai. Nope, he's not. He's a pure-bred Filipinosengihnampakgigi.

It's a pleasure meeting all of you. There will be times that it takes time to visit you back but I promised I'll be there anytime I'm free. And if ever you'll visit Thailand, don't hesitate to drop me a line. I'll be here waiting for you in Hatyai City with open arms and sweet smile.

        Just Beautiful: Taj Mahal

Last Saturday we went to Samila Beach and we passed through Klong hae district. My hubby told me that there's an on-going project that looks like Taj Mahal-a mausoleum located in Agra, India. It is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is widely considered as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and stands as a symbol of eternal love.

Somebody asked me after seeing this photo "Are you in India?"

soon-to-arise mosque in Klong Hae, Hatyai City, Songkhla with a design that's inspired by Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal- finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Islamic and Indian architectural styles.
