Last night we read this passage in Proverbs 10:27 that states "The fear of the Lord adds length to life". Our youth-orientated culture often gives old age a bad image, but clearly God doesn't agree. To Him, old age is the reward for a life well-lived, a privilege earned, an accomplishment worth celebrating, and wisdom shared to benefit succeeding generations. He views long life as evidence of His favor. Longevity, with all its aches and pains, is a blessing. Few years ago, I met someone who doesn't want to reach 70 years old. She wanted to die gracefully at age 50 or 60. I asked her why? It's because she's worried that no one will take care of her when she gets old. She doesn't have a family. I let her read God's promises to His children found in the book of Isaiah "I have cared for you since you were born... I will be your God throughout your lifetime - until your hair is white with age... I will care for you...' What an insurance policy completed with social security disability insurance ! Is there proof that He does? Yes, ask David the Psalmist. 'Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread' (Psalm 37:25 NLT). You know what, that woman is now married with a son and she's not afraid anymore of getting old.
Me? I wanted to reach 100 years old!
