Spring Fashion Trend: Neon

Tomorrow will be the first day of our Summer English Class and first day finally getting away from our boring school uniform- polo shirt and black trousers.

How I love to incorporate neon in my wardrobe. Neon works best with black: the neutral lets you ease into bright shades but still makes them pop.

photo from http://lovelybylucy.blogspot.com/

One mega-bright piece will light up your whole look! If you’re rather shy to wear neon colors, try it on a clutch or a purse small or medium-sized, it’s perfect for accessorizing a monochromatic outfit.

Brighten up your mood and enjoy neon.

Jordin Sparks : How she lose 30 pounds !

One way to motivate you to lose weight is reading real success stories of how one shed weight not by diet pills like phenteripped but through eating right and exercising. One example is Jordin Sparks.

Jordin Sparks is an American pop / RB recording artist, songwriter and actress who rose to fame as the winner of the sixth season of American Idol. She hails from Glendale, Arizona. Sparks won when she was 17 years old, making her the youngest winner in Idol history.

When she got pneumonia at the end of 2010, she couldn't even walk a few feet without getting winded. She hated feeling so weak, and that's when it clicked. If she wanted to feel stronger, inside and out, she had to make eating right and exercising a priority and so she did! She ended up losing 30 pounds over the next year, but according to her the real payoff was learning how amazing it feels to treat her body right. She's thankful too to her personal trainer:

“Any time I find time — or I’m not sleeping — he’s like, ‘Let’s work out, let’s do something.’ I’m like, ‘no,’ but he gets my butt up and I’ve got to do it,” Jordin says. “It’s fun to do that. He doesn’t keep the same thing every time,” Jordin says. “He shocks the body so you’re running, you’re doing throw downs, you’re doing stairs, you’re doing lunges.”

What do you think about the change?

A note to myself

Before the sun sets, I need to run to the nearest school supplies store to buy cute rubber stamps embossed with cute creatures and shapes. Various sets are available there with kid-friendly themes such as forest animals, princesses, circus characters, letters and numbers. What for? It's our first day of English Summer Class tomorrow and I need rubber stamps to decorate my students' art works for the day.

One more thing, I will pay a visit to the nearest hardware and head straight to the store's catches and accessories section . I'm looking for  keyed locksets for my school's table drawer.

Happy Sunday everyone!

What to do with yellow nails?

I'm used to light pink on my nails because dark polish gives my nails an icky yellow stain! It looks so dirty! So, if you happen to use dark nails, don't worry about yellow nails afterwards coz there's a solution right in your kitchen- lemon! Rub down your nails with a lemon wedge (the acid helps cancel out the yellow) and follow with a vitamin-enriched treatment to return your nails to good health.

Can You Really Make Money from Blogging?

I’ve been blogging since January 2009. Blogging is my creative outlet to take my personal journals online to share with family and friends especially my thoughts as a new mom. My son, Hyzyd, was just 2 months at that time. I love to journal his every week milestones. Then I came to know lots of mommy bloggers online who shared that not only their blogs became outlets of information but they also use it for money-making opportunities!

I started small. After 6 months of blogging, I registered my blog to several paid blogging that accept blogs and then pay me for the blog posts I put up. I started with $1.50 for 150-200 words post. Nowadays, I started receiving $40 from generous advertisers for 200-words article! Others just ask me to place a link in any post of my choice and most of them pay regularly. To date (after two years of blogging) I was able to put up 7 blogs that make money (not that much compared to other bloggers but it's enough to support my hobby and other stuff) and I have 3 others which are still on infancy stage.

Blogs are excellent tools to earn some extra money without having to invest start-up cash. They’re loved by the search engines because blogs are usually updated frequently, unlike websites that are updated less often.

Millions of people visit blogs every day for information or entertainment purposes. A lot of the blog visitors are ones that come back to check in on the latest entries into a blogger’s world.

Another way I make money from my blogs is by using advertisement space. Advertisers offered me $120/year to place one of their text links or banner on my popular blogs- those with high page ranks. There are advertisers that are willing to pay you based on the traffic numbers you generate and the prime space available within your blog.

There are many ways you can monetize ad space. You might charge a flat fee, take a commission based on the number of click-through, or make a deal where you get a percentage of the sale of a product, much like an affiliate marketer does.

If your blog is extremely popular, then there’s more of a chance that advertiser’s will compete to have their banners placed in your space. Blogs are a good way to earn some money by sharing your thoughts, feeling and even your daily tasks.

Can you really make money blogging? Yes, you can. I sure did! As a proof here’s my latest buy out from my blogging money:

Choose a topic that has a high number of searches, launch a free blog at Blogger.com or WordPress.com, and strategically implement your ads and offers to start seeing a steady income build over time.

How to Start a Blog

There's always a first time in everything. Like in blogging, I don't have a single idea how to start a blog not unless a friend of mine shown me her blog. It enthralled me to find her blog loaded with posts and photos of how her weeks gone by. Her blog's template fascinates me. I was mesmerized on how she's able to have photos, texts and links in her blog's sidebar. I later knew that those photos, texts and links were called "widgets" or blog's "gadgets". I don't need to be a computer expert to learn how to add these gadgets in my blog because they're already available and all I need to do is just click "add gadget".

Everyone can start a blog as long as you have passion in writing (plus you have your own computer and internet connection). When you have passion in something, you have such enthusiasm to know more about that thing. You persevere and endure difficulties just to be acquainted to your object of desire. Same goes in blogging. You have to find time to at least write and update your blog once a week. Visit other bloggers' journal , you'll pick inspirations in there. Make friends in the blogosphere. It's more inspiring to blog when you'll know you got readers.

When my friends asked me how to start a blog, here's what I told them:

1. Create a blog in blogger.com or wordpress.com. They're both free. Fill out the one-step form and you’ll be blogging seconds later! These blogging networks have several templates you can choose from and you are guided through the set up process from picking your blog's name to how you want your blog to look like. Both have easy interface that is perfect for those who are new to research.
2. What to blog? Start blogging blog about your life in general- your job, hobby, food, about your kids and what it’s like to be a parent ! Whatever you choose to blog about it needs to be something you are passionate about. Don’t forget, you are going to be writing about this topic several times a week, and if you don’t have the enthusiasm for it, that will show in your posts – and no one else will have the enthusiasm to read them.
Do you know that you can earn from your blog? YES! There are several paid blogging networks that accept blogs and then pay you for the blog posts you put up. Some give you what to write about, others just ask for you to place a link in any post of your choice and most of them pay regularly. But before this will happen, let's move to the next step.

2. Buy a Domain name. Domain name? What is this? Domain name is a unique address for your blog. Similar to a physical address, a domain name tells people exactly where to find you on the internet. See my blog's name above? It's www.genejostory.com not www.genejostory.blogspot.com or www.genejostory.wordpress.com.

This is the first rule especially if you want to take paid blog posts. Domain names are quite affordable. If you are looking for a .com, you can get that for less than $12. Godaddy.com is a favorite for a lot of folks. You can also try Name.com.

3. Get Hosting. This blog, Her and History, is my first blog. After six months of blogging and being encouraged by my friends to start monetizing my blog, I set my blog's setting in advance. I bought a domain name in blogger (click Settings~Publishing~Need a domain? Buy one now!) and my blog is hosted for FREE. The only problem with that is that with blogger, sometimes there might be a glitch or something and then you lose all your hard work. You really can’t complain, after all you are being hosted for free.

So, with the advice of my blogging-expert friends, I make use of self-hosted WordPress. This means that I buy a domain name and buy hosting. Then I get a WordPress blog installed and I'm ready to blog.

If you need hosting and other blog services feel free to ask other bloggers (you can ask me) or read reviews.

If you are ready to begin blogging, it really does not take much. Examine your options and happy blogging!

Lapel Pins

Back home in Philippines, we can't get inside the school campus without wearing uniform and ID. Here in Thailand, specifically in my school, our students got IDs but they don't wear it for everyone to see. They use it for library use. Parents got hold of another copy of their children's ID in order to enter the school and fetch their children. Our students don't need IDs because their names and school's logo are already displayed on their uniform like Hyzyd's:

As for university students like my sister, they don't need to wear their IDs, it's all about lapel pins custom like these:

Almost all Thai university students wear the same uniform. The only way to recognize the wearer's university is through their lapel pins bearing the name of their school and the university's logo.

...even their belts are customized!

The DJ saves the day

Gone are the days where the DJ's role is just to make a couple of announcements and play good music on radio. Nowadays, DJs are hired in weddings, birthdays, award ceremonies and other social gatherings. They play a song, then mix into another song, they learn what goes with what music, how to loop it together using their trusted technics 1200 turntable, in order to get a good set for listeners to enjoy and dance to.

Here's a movie where a DJ played a significant role in saving the day of the cheerleaders:

Because of the campus D.J,  Derek (Richard Lee Jackson) , who mix cheers and dance remixes , the so-called "ragtag squad" of Whittier got the best remixes of hottest tracks which contributes to them winning over the varsity squad for a spot at the national championship .

Watch here the Renegade's routine and the DJ that saves the day:

Book Review: Iris and the Dragonflies by Rosemary Danielis

Few minutes ago, I just finished reading Iris and the Dragonflies by Rosemary Danielies. It's one of the books that I can't put down because tensions are building up from one page to another. I can't wait to know what will happen next. Iris and the Dragonflies is a Middle-Grade Fantasy Novel but I never thought that I get hooked with it- a 30-year-old teacher at that! I enjoyed this fantasy novel because it brings out the child in me and broaden my imagination. Thanks to the creative and wonderful description of the author about the beautiful dragonflies, the peaceful creek, and that crumbly castle in Ireland because those places have taken form and I can't help admiring them in my imagination and wishing I'll be Iris for a brief moment of my life to experience her adventure on understanding and talking to dragonflies and to experience how it feels to be able to see the past. I'm really having fun throughout my reading session. I never had a dull moment from page to page. Each chapter has a mixture of everything-  humor, seriousness, friendship, loyalty, suspense, drama and mystery! The author is keen enough to include real middle grade issues that our main character Iris has to face- bullies, first crushes, and school rivalries.

One of my favorite parts was when Iris and her family travel to Ireland. Iris had a life-changing adventure in there and I was drawn to the wonderful stories about dragons, dragon seer and dragon's tooth told by Iris' grandmother. It seems like I'm reading a beautiful, engaging and entertaining history lessons!

Another part  about this book that I love and I could relate to is about the resourcefulness of Iris' teacher, Ms. Aldrich. She's my inspiration to teach my students to save the Earth even in their own little ways. I love how this book integrates ecological awareness and message to help save Mother earth. If given a chance, I want to try my hands on Ms.Aldrich's DREAM Project to encourage children to think of ways to help save Mother Earth. By the way DREAM stands for:

D ecide to
R espect the
E arth and
A dmire its
M agnificence

I'm looking forward for the sequel of this book. I'm so excited to know if Iris and her friends will join Lunaris School. Does it have resemblance with Hogwarts School ( school of Harry Potter)? How will she and her friends defeat the Evil Solaris? How come the dragonflies were once the dragons? I can't wait to continue on Iris' journey and see what else the author has in store!I have this wishful thinking to watch on cinema one day Iris and the Dragonflies. It would be FUN-tastic!

Here's the synopsis of Iris and the Dragonflies from the author herself:
Iris, a feisty, solitary, eleven-year-old prefers being down by the creek near her house more than anywhere else in the world. School is nothing but a joyless prison and uninterested in her classmates she spends each day gazing out the window, waiting for the dismissal bell.

Her only friends are the dragonflies who flit through the bulrushes by the creek. She is thrilled to discover she can talk to them, but must keep this unusual ability to herself. People simply wouldn’t understand.

Iris doesn’t know that the dragonflies are not what they appear to be. They need Iris to unleash the power of the Earth and lead them into battle. This, however, is not what the Solaris have in mind. They have their own plans for the Earth and will not let anyone stand in their way, especially not Iris!

Iris has a lot to learn before she can help the dragonflies and fulfill her destiny and this is the beginning of her exciting journey.

I can't wait to share this book to my twelve-year-old sister. This is one of the good books that she's looking for- something that she'll like to read even if she doesn't want to read.

Thanks to the author, Rosemary Danielis, for giving me this privilege to review her beautiful novel (I'm reading via Kindle apps on my Ipad 2). I can't wait for the next book of Iris and Dragonflies. If you want to purchase Iris and the Dragonflies by Rosemary Danielis, a great fantasy story for middle graders and up, you can do so at Amazon.com.  The Kindle version is only $2.99!  You can also connect the Iris and the Dragonflies facebook page to know more about this book.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Here's How I Save Money on Groceries

Happy Saturday everyone! In case you’re wondering where the heck am I for the past days and why I haven’t updated this blog and how my Valentine’s goes…I just got myself up from being buried with workbooks, test papers and grades! It’s been a looooooong week and I’m glad it is Saturday- time to relax…take a breath and plunge on laundry and household chores. An hour from now, I gonna go to market to buy fresh veggies, fruits and fish. I gonna do my grocery for the week too afterwards.

Speaking of grocery, the average family’s grocery bill is usually one of the higher numbers on the family budget, right? There can be an enormous difference in what each family spends on their groceries, depending on many factors, such as whether you buy name brand, more meat, and more.

The good news is that this allows for a large amount of savings if we decide to be frugal with our shopping. Here are few simple tips I’ve been doing for the past years to save on groceries:

1.) Make a meal plan. You’ll know exactly what you need from the store before you go.

2.) Watch for specials and coupons in store newsletters, and plan your meals around them.

3.) Make a list and stick to it. If it’s not on the list, don’t buy it.

4.) Don’t shop when you’re hungry. That way you won’t be tempted to buy things that you don’t need.

5.) Only buy things you know you’ll use. For example, if your family doesn’t like broccoli, don’t buy broccoli in the hopes that they’ll eat healthier this week.

6.) Keep your eyes on the items on the bottom shelf where the prices are lower.

7.) Buy store brands when the quality is the same. Most of the time, it actually is the same product in a different package.

It’s pretty easy to be frugal once you realize how much money you’re actually saving with these simple steps. Keep a log of your grocery bills, so you can see how much of a difference you are making. The money you save can be added on your family monthly savings account, can be used for emergency expenses, and investment for your family’s future like buying stocks or gold or silver coins ( there’s a morgan silver dollars for sale available online). Stock investing is a very good way to take advantage of a growing economy and protect our investments from a declining economy. By simply purchasing gold or silver coins, a person can be assured that no matter what stormy economic climate is happening around them, they will have a shining shelter of protection. There will always be a high demand for these precious metals. In fact, many experts speculate that we have only just begun to see the beginning of the rise to prominence that gold and especially silver will soon enjoy.

This is how I manage my time

As a mother, wife, pre-school teacher and a part-time blogger, I badly needed to manage my time to take care of my family, my career, my spiritual life, my blogs and other things! In order to remind myself on what I needed to do each day and efficiently do each task, the following tips proves to be helpful and makes my day more productive:

1. Get a day planner and use it faithfully. I keep all appointments and reminder in just one place, my day planner.

2. Create a daily “to do” list. If you do this on your computer or mobile phone (sign up for free at Remember the Milk or Toodledo) , you can easily move around items as you prioritize the day. If on paper, you can code the items with numbers or letters for: Urgent, Need to Do Today, Can Do This Week.

3. Read your To-Do list first thing in the morning. Don’t open your Facebook account, Twitter, or email or answer the phone until you see the road map for your day.

4. Review your To-Do list at mid-day and end of day to see what was accomplished and what remains to be completed.

5. At the end of the day, transfer the items remaining to tomorrow’s or Monday’s list. If possible, remove any items that are not significant.

6. Let voice mail answer your phone while you are focusing on an important task.

7. Say “no” as often as possible when you have reached your work limits. I don’t do overtime at school or taking work home. When we are mentally or physically exhausted we don’t do our best work and we need to say so.

It’s easy to stay on track with time management once you commit to changing your daily habits. Just put the above tips into action and you should see more free time throughout your day.
